Case Summary:

In this case we were offered the opportunity to work with a Vietnamese applied mathematician, who had focused specifically on computational inverse problems for ground penetrating radar and infrared thermography with applications in detection of objects buried under ground or hidden by obstacles. As part of our successful strategy for our client’s case, we submitted extensive documentation proving his highly significant contributions to his field, which included 16 peer-reviewed journal articles, 10 conference papers, 2 book chapters, a thesis, and numerous invited talks.  This work had received at least 253 citations by the time we filed his case, nearly all of which were by independent researchers around the world, demonstrating the wide recognition of and reliance upon our client’s work in his field. We also showed that his continued employment in his field would benefit both his field as a whole and the people of the United States in general. An independent recommender confirmed the importance of his work: “[Client’s] work in creating models to detect and categorize unidentified objects hidden from normal view has been significant; the methods he has developed have provided novel imaging methods for detecting buried objects. These can range from archeological sites long since buried, flaws in materials such as bubbles or cracks that could undermine the structure or for detecting and differentiating landmines. The latter is a notable contribution of [Client].” We successfully argued that our client would serve the national interest to a significantly greater degree than others with similar education and experience.
